Painting a sorry picture about education system in Karnataka, a recent survey carried out by Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan revealed that as many as 1,70,525 lakh children in the State are out of school. This survey includes children who have never enrolled into school and those who have dropped out of school.

The survey was conducted following an order from the Karnataka High Court after it took up suo motu notice of stark contrast in figures quoted by activists and those presented by the state education department, standing at 6.28 lakh and 51,994 respectively.

According to the survey, Bangalore South has the most number of out-of-school children, which is 18,393.

This is followed by Gulbarga with 15,468 and Raichur with 12,128 out of school children. On the other hand, Uttara Kannada had the least number of such children, which is 686.

Explaining the reason for Bangalore South's dismal figures, a senior education department official said, "The high numbers are mainly due to migration. Bangalore South has regions like Anekal, KR Puram, BTM Layout, Electronic City, Vijayanagar, Jayanagar, Basavanagudi and Magadi Road. There is a lot of construction work happening in these areas. This includes both apartment construction and Metro work," reported TOI.

The survey was conducted among children between 7 and 14 years of age and out of the 1,70,525 lakh out of school children 83,820 are girls.
